I think making your environment less judgemental and offering a hand rather than your opinion.

As a parent, I would want:

– my kid to be challenged

– my kid to be safe

– and my kid to enjoy going to daycare

As a parent, I would be afraid of:

– maltreatment

– them getting hurt

– child not enjoying the time outside of my care

Allowing it to be interactive and allowing for serve and return moments. Not only with you and your students but between children, they can learn from each other.

Transitions are the most important to transition children from one activity to another. Something that might work are songs, Mighty Minutes, and minute reminders.

I think that one of the more important things is that it is a safe environment and fosters curiosity in children.

Prepare the points you’re going to touch on, ensure that you phrase the developmental report as a mostly good thing with a few things to work on. Use words that are not negative.

Observing and documenting a child’s progress shows the milestones they’ve achieved. It shows their progression and allows for a better plan going forward that caters to their developmental goals.

Maybe 30 minutes is okay to use for a learning activity. It’s not beneficial to derive children the experience of screentime because the reality is that our world needs it. I think monitored screentime and using it for learning is good.

I think that the best serve and return activity is one on one. Something that a child is interested in or discovering for the first time might be the best way we can provide a serve and return interaction.

I think I would approach her and inform her kindly of our pickup time. I would also ask if they have anyone else they could put on the pickup list.

1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. Strongly agree — this allows children to foster a sense of connection and be aware of the different types of people that are around them.
2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. Agree — Although this can be good for children, differently families might have practices that prevent them from being fully involved. It’s good to be involved and such, however, this should be optional. If it’s mandatory, it won’t actually be willing.
3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. Agree — To the best of a center’s ability, I think it is important to cater to children with special needs. If a family lacks certain resources, it’s important to attempt to reach out and provide some sort of help.
4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Disagree — I think this depends on a family dynamic. If the extended family member (aunt, uncles, cousins, etc) have always been involved in raising the child, there’s no reason to tear that away from the child. Their extended family might have insight that the parents might not consider and they can be a part of their support system.
5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. Agree — I think that as teachers, our curriculum should be flexible and accomodating to our children. Some children might like something but might not have the resources at home.
6. Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. Disagree — I think this includes all of that. Diversity includes the variety of ages, our capabilities, and the adults that are in our children’s lives.
7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Disagree — Not everything is portrayed fairly or accurately in our media.
8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. Disagree — That’s not really encouraging diversity. At all.

POINT OF VIEW

– Being an immigrant, I think that being able to openly express your cultural identity is a big part of who you are as a person. Assimilation is important but to be able to hold onto your cultural identity and values are important too.

For this one, I decided to just do my own family as that’s what I’m the most familiar with.

I think that something that would have helped little me embrace my culture would be more discussions about it. Maybe something as simple as implementing stories about my country, using something as a food activity and maybe even a culture night to foster connection with other cultures. I think the first step to celebration is acknowledgement.
