Sit quietly and not talk. If I’m eating my lunch, I am aware of each bite, chewing, and not listening or participating in the convo going on around me. If I have time left, I walk upstairs and sit quietly in a corner just breathing in and out. Then my alarm goes off.

Spend some time getting to know each child by close observation. Giving them your full attention gives you valuable feedback.

Accept my child as he/she is. Get to know his/her temperament, likes and dislikes. Teach her how to get along with peers (respect while having fun).

Fears include unfortunate accidents that could have been avoided or prevented. My child feeling like he/she doesn’t belong. Boredom, lack of excitement and wonder.

Some engaging activities that can spark curiosity and ask questions can be taking a walk around the neighborhood or field trip to a park, beach trip, trip to the store to make something at school. Learning to play a game like Memory or Picture Dominoes are great for older kids.

Allow for transition time from one activity to the next. Use pictures for younger children to show schedule. Be consistent and do everything you can to follow the schedule every day.

First of all, the schedule has to be realistic with special consideration to transition time. Consistency is key, follow every day. Younger kids can get used to a picture schedule with velcro. In the past, we take the picture off when that activity is over so that the kids know the progression of the schedule through the day. They can clearly see the beginning and end. This was practiced when I worked in a SpEd preschool 3-5 year olds.

When point of views differ, some respond by defending their own belief. Others may choose to listen quietly. I believe that we can change our point of views when we decide to be open to other ideas. Education is the best way to understand and see things another way.
