Some of the best ways to help children recognize their emotions and control their responses include labeling and validating their emotions, teaching them calming techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness, and modeling appropriate emotional regulation through positive interactions with them and others. Also, helping children to understand that it is okay to feel and express emotions in a healthy and respectful manner can support their emotional development and self-control.

Some examples of responsive exchanges with children are using open-ended questions, actively listening to what the child is saying, and validating their feelings. For instance, if a child tells you they are sad, you could say, “I’m sorry you’re feeling sad. Can you tell me more about why you’re feeling that way?” or “It’s okay to feel sad. What can we do to help you feel better?”

My advice to other early learning providers who want to build connections with children in their classroom is to be present, engaged, and responsive to each child’s unique needs and interests. Also, it is important to actively involve children in the learning process and provide opportunities for them to explore and experiment with the environment around them.

One way to make healthy habits fun is by incorporating games and activities that promote physical activity, such as dancing, scavenger hunts, or relay races. You can also make it fun by involving children in food preparation and cooking activities.

If I suspect child abuse or neglect, report my suspicions to the appropriate authorities like Child Protective Services or law enforcement. Document any observations or concerns I have about the child’s safety or well-being. Ensure the safety of the child by providing a safe place for them, and follow up with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the child’s safety is being addressed.

Communication, I want open and honest communication with my child’s provider to know how my child is doing, what they are learning, and any issues that may arise. Safety and security, I want to feel confident that my child is safe and secure in the care of their provider, and that the environment is clean, healthy, and age-appropriate. Quality care and education, I want my child to receive quality care that supports their physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development, and that aligns with my family’s values and beliefs.

Also connecting learning to children’s interests and cultural backgrounds can help make learning more engaging and relevant.
