  • To engage children in meaningful learning, use hands-on exploration like sensory play, ask open-ended questions to spark imagination, and encourage storytelling or role play for language and social skills. Take children outdoors for nature exploration, incorporate music and movement to develop coordination, and set up interactive learning stations to foster problem-solving and cooperation. These activities support creativity, critical thinking, and physical development, making learning fun and engaging

  • Keep routines predictable to help children feel secure. It’s also important to be flexible and adjust the schedule as needed to accommodate the children’s needs and moods.

Yes, one especially important component of a good early learning environment is that it has a sense of belonging and emotional security. When children feel safe, valued, and connected to their environment and the adults within it, they are more likely to engage in exploration, take learning risks, and build positive relationships. A nurturing and inclusive atmosphere that reflects the children’s identities and cultures helps build this foundation.Well organized interest based centers that are thoughtfully designed to support all areas of development; social, emotional, cognitive, and physical are extremely important. These centers offer children the ability to make choices, engage in hands on learning, and explore materials in ways that match their individual learning styles and preferences

  • Prepare and practice before meeting or talking to the parent. Prior to the meeting or chat, you should have documentation prepared so that you have something concrete to share with the parent. Always be prepared that it may not go the way you expected, or wanted it to go. Reassure the parent that any findings you may have will be used to help tailor the child’s learning experience, not to diagnose. By approaching the conversation in a positive, transparent, and collaborative way, you build trust and ensure the parent feels involved in the process.

  • Observing and documenting a child’s development helps early learning providers understand each child’s individual strengths, challenges, and needs. It allows providers to plan developmentally appropriate activities, adapt the environment, and offer support that matches each child’s growth and learning style. Documentation also ensures quality care, helps meet licensing requirements, and maintains a record to share with families while protecting confidentiality

I believe screen time should be very limited or avoided entirely in childcare settings. Research shows that too much screen time can negatively impact children’s executive function skills like attention, concentration, and impulse control. It can also affect language, social skills, and emotional development. Since young children learn best through real interactions with people and their environment, providers should focus on hands-on, play-based learning instead of screens. By keeping childcare screen-free, we help support healthy brain development and save children’s limited daily screen time for their families at home

Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment by closely following children’s interests, responding with encouragement, labeling objects and feelings, and taking turns during interactions. They should wait for the child’s response, follow the child’s lead, and recognize when the child is ready to move on. By doing this throughout daily routines, providers build strong relationships and support healthy brain development.

I would start off with empathy and understanding. that we understand things personally might be going on that’s affecting getting picked up on time. then I would acknowledge the impact it has, that as much as we’d like to keep said child, we also have responsibilities, and want to ensure the child gets home safely. then try to figure out the problem and offer solutions. at the end, reaffirm support, that we appreciate the parent for trying to work this through with us, and we want to assist in any way we can.

WAC 110-300-0160 (Promoting acceptance of diversity). The big messages these WACs give are that early learning programs must intentionally build respectful, collaborative relationships with families, value family input, and create welcoming environments that reflect and honor each family’s culture, language, and identity. Programs must also actively teach and model acceptance of diversity to the children in their care

While completing the activity, I discovered that the WACs are incredibly detailed and cover nearly every aspect of running or working in an early learning program—from staff qualifications and training to health records, safety procedures, and even what needs to be posted on the walls. I was a little surprised by how specific some of them are, like the requirements for posting evacuation routes and maintaining up-to-date child records, but I can also see how these detailed guidelines help create a safe and consistent environment for both children and staff. The WACs will absolutely influence my day-to-day practice because they provide a clear structure for what is expected and help ensure that children receive high-quality care in a safe, well-organized setting. They also help me feel more prepared and confident in my responsibilities, knowing I have a clear guide to follow.
