First, giving them a safe space to calm down is best. This also gives you time to observe their feelings to help identify how to help them. You can take this time to listen to what they are feeling and saying, also finding out what their interest are.

Making sure they stay engaged with activities like art, music, playing outside, whether it is with the group or giving extra support to a child who might need one-on-one time to get to know what might be bothering them and what kind of things they might like to do for fun!

Deep breathing usually works for me, however, taking a walk would probably be one of the best ways to relieve stress.

Learning about the types of food that are good and bad for you, like the food pyramid making a game out of it, cutting fruits and foods into fun shapes and learning about fun fitness games.

I would highlight all policies and procedures pertaining to classroom and playground safety, food and fire safety, sanitation, equipment safety, any pamphlets I can supply to them about our facility, and in case of emergency contacts list on file are just a few things I would highlight.

You must contact CPS if you even suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. You must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect. Even if you have made a report to CPS about a particular child earlier, you must report each new injury or incident. Do not attempt to interview the child or to manage the situation yourself. Both interviewing and investigating are the responsibility of CPS.

Have good documentation of your observations to share objectively and try going over what you have prepared to say with a co-worker. Then make sure to have some local resources to help assist the family in the right direction.

Observing and documenting a child’s development and growth can enhance the ability of the providers to make adjustments in teaching techniques or curriculum to provide the best outcome for the child. It also brings insight into understanding the stages of development.

Sometimes things happen, however, if it continues to be an on-going issue then there may need to be time set aside for a meeting to discuss the matter and go over the company’s policies.

WAC 110-300-0160 Promoting acceptance of diversity. (1) An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse
learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that
represent all children, families, and staff. A provider must use
equipment and materials that include but are not limited to:

(a) Diverse dolls, books, pictures, games, or materials that do
not reinforce stereotypes.

(b) Diverse music from many cultures in children’s primary languages; and

(c) A balance of different ethnic and cultural groups, ages,
abilities, family styles, and genders.

(2) An early learning provider must intervene appropriately to
stop biased behavior displayed by children or adults including, but
not limited to:

(a) Redirecting an inappropriate conversation or behavior.

(b) Being aware of situations that may involve bias and responding appropriately; and

(c) Refusing to ignore bias.
