If a child has an outburst ask the child if they need some alone time to think. If they say yes allow them to have some moments alone then let the child know that when they are ready to talk they can come to you. Then during this time give the child some mindfulness advice let them know that sometimes breathe can help regulate themselves.

Having time to myself away from the stress is also helpful, doing things I enjoy doing can help relieve some of that stress.

Listening to the child, maintaining eye contact letting the child know you are listening. Offering the child sensory toys to relive stress, or offering them quiet time to destress.

Making sure to involve all the kids and making sure no is or feels left out of activities. Interacting, talking and asking questions to a child can help build that connection and make them know you see and hear them.

I would then show them all the exits, windows, climate control, where we store cleaning supplies as well as the locks on the cabins and the baby gates. I would also ensure them routine checks are being done on things like fire alarms and fire extinguishers. as well as the labels on everything and ask them if they have any more safety questions or overall concerns.

My biggest worry about keeping children healthy and safe is that you don’t know when an intruder can arrive or the people around you even parents can sudden get angry. You can’t predict what that person will do.

Always be welcoming and open to questions from parents. Never make them feel like you are against their child. Always offer support and resources to help support the family.

For example if the children prefer to do art introduce learning activities that crayons or coloring pencils can be used. If children in animals read books about animals and they can engage by saying the animal sounds along with the story.
