Listening to a child so that they can express what they are feeling in a safe environment and then validating those feelings.

When giving a tour I would highlight the first aid kits, sanitation, safety routines and evacuation plans as well as building safety features

  • A good way to engage children is by asking them questions such as what are you cooking, what are you drawing. I think that listening and allowing them to feel comfortable expressing their creativity is equally important.

I think scheduling based around meal times and nap times is a great way to start

I think it is especially important for the environment to be clean and safe, as well as welcomed and supported.

  • I would first document the behaviors I am noticing so that when I begin to write a script, I can look back and provide good evidence. I would the refer them to get a developmental screening.

  • Observing a child’s development is important when creating a curriculum that meets their needs but helps them learn, and it can also help you to recognize if the child has any developmental red flags

I don’t think screen time is appropriate at all for children under 5, and after 5 i believe it should be very limited.

I think guided play is a great and affective way to implement the serve and return as a child can show interest and the provider can respond.

I would first communicate the consequences that come with picking up the child late such as fear from the child that their parent has forgotten them as well as the staff that also need to stay late, and then I would ask if there is something getting in the way of the parent picking up the child on time and help find a solution.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that early learning providers must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities through their curriculum activities and materials that represent the kids and families. These can include things like racially diverse dolls and music. The big messages that the WAC relates are that all children should feel represented and accepted, and that including these racially diverse learning opportunities will help do that.

    1. One thing I discovered was how specific each of the WACs are and how many issues are covered by them. I think that this specificity is very important so that there is little possibility for misinterpretation.

    2. I was surprised to read that there are possibilities to become exempt from licensing standards. It makes sense as to why this is a possibility, it was just never something that crossed my mind.

    3. Yes, I can see this very much affecting my day-to-day practice. It will definitely influence the way I interact and learn about the children. I think its great how specific it is. One WAC that stood out to me was the family support and self assessment. Knowing where the communities fall short will help when deciding what to enhance in the program.
